Breast Reduction: About the Procedure
Breast reduction almost always takes place in a surgical clinic or hospital under general anesthesia, which means you’ll be asleep during the entire operation. The surgery usually takes two to four hours. You may stay in the hospital for one to two days following the surgery.

To reduce, lift and contour your breasts, the surgeon will make an incision around your areola (the dark area which surrounds the nipple) so it can be repositioned. If desired, the size of the areola can be reduced during this surgery as well.

Another incision is made in the crease under the breast (inframammary crease).

A third incision is made which extends vertically from the areola to the crease. Through this inverted T-shaped incision, excess tissue, fat and skin are removed and the breast is reshaped and lifted.

There are different techniques for breast reduction that result in variations in the shape of the incision. Discuss this with your plastic surgeon.

Liposuction may be used to remove excess fat from the armpit area. Small stitches are made under the skin to close the incisions, and bandages are applied.
