Breast Augmentation: Determining Your Size
A way to determine breast measurement was described by Edward Pechter, M.D. in The Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, (September 1997) issue.
  • First, determine your “band” measurement—the “34”, “36”, “38” equation. Place a measuring tape around your chest under your breasts and add 5 inches. Now you know what your band size is.

  • Next, determine your “cup” size by placing the tape on one breast starting from the outside of the breast, over the fullest part, to the inside. If the distance across your breast is 7 inches you are an A cup; if the distance across the breast is 8 inches you're a B cup; if the distance across the breast is 9 inches you are a C cup; if the distance across the breast is 10 inches you are a D cup.
Some plastic surgeons recommend that to help you decide what size you want to be after augmentation, buy a bra that fits you in the band size with the cup size you wish to be. Experiment by filling out different cup sizes with soft cotton or even rice-filled zipper-lock type sandwich bags. When you like what you see, show your doctor what size you have in mind.

Your plastic surgeon will give you recommendations and realistic expectations. Ask to see before and after photographs for a clearer picture of what to expect. The doctor’s goal is to give you pleasing results that will make you happy for a long time.
