Preparation for dental recontouring is a team effort with your dentist. You should tell him/her what is troubling you about your teeth. He/she will explain what you can reasonably expect from having teeth reshaped. He/she may show you "before" and "after" patient snapshots. Some dentists use computer imaging to show you how you will look after the procedure.
Tooth reshaping is only done on healthy teeth. Your dentist will shoot x-rays to evaluate the size and location of the pulp (the connective tissue containing nerves and blood vessels within each tooth) and to check that there's enough bone between the teeth to support them. Photographs may be taken of your teeth, so you can see the difference after the procedure is done. Sometimes improvements are subtle.
The dentist may mark your teeth with a pencil or modify your "before" photographs before performing treatment. Then he/she is ready to sculpt your teeth.
