Tooth Contouring or Reshaping:
Who Is a Candidate?
Your dentist will help you determine if tooth reshaping is for you. You may be a candidate if:
  • You're concerned about the appearance of your teeth.
  • You're in your late teens or older.
  • Minimal removal of tooth structure will solve your problem.
  • You have normal, healthy teeth.
Much depends on how you view your dental imperfections. A tiny chip may make one person self-conscious and be barely noticeable to another. Some people decide to reshape their teeth because of their professions. If you entertain or speak before groups, you may be more inclined to want to minimize dental defects.

Tooth reshaping is a conservative way to improve the teeth. But since teeth can become weaker if large amounts of enamel are removed, it should be limited to minor changes or combined with veneers or bonding for optimum results.

Conditions that might disqualify your teeth for reshaping include:
  • Thin enamel.
  • Teeth that have large restorations--replacement of the structure with metal, plastic or cement.
  • Teeth that have recently grown through the gum into the mouth.
  • Teeth missing a large amount of structure.
  • Teeth with gum tissue between them that might be damaged by the procedure.
  • Teeth with large amounts of cavities.
  • Shifting teeth.
