Dentures are removable artificial appliances, or false teeth, that are used to fill spaces where natural teeth are missing. The most common reasons for wearing dentures are to improve appearance, aid in chewing, and prevent teeth from drifting. Partial dentures fill in gaps where teeth are missing and are usually held in place by wires that wrap around existing natural teeth. Complete, or full, dentures function as an entire set of teeth and are generally held in place by denture adhesive.
Good dentures will help you to eat, speak, and look better, and, most importantly, will not damage your remaining natural teeth. Dentures that fit poorly because they’re old or because they weren’t properly made can cause pain and irritation. Old dentures that no longer fit the teeth accurately tend to sink into the gums and give rise to decay and gum disease. Over time, the dentures may warp or the wires may bend, creating too much force on teeth and causing them to loosen. Dentures that aren’t properly made or fitted can cause your face muscles to get tired or sore and make eating difficult. However, if dentures fit appropriately and are well cared for, they can provide several years of benefit.
If you do wear dentures, it’s a good idea to clean them after each meal with a soft-bristle denture brush and soak them in denture cleanser at least once a day. For more information, consult your dentist.
