There can be some minor side effects to tooth bleaching.
Patients using Power or Laser Bleaching sometimes experience increased tooth sensitivity to cold following the treatment. The sensitivity usually stops when the whitening procedure is complete. To address this sensitivity, dentists can prescribe prescription strength fluoride gel or can give you a desensitizing gel to be used in the mouth tray before applying the whitening gel. There may also be small white patches at the gum line. These symptoms generally disappear within 1-3 days after completion of the treatment.
About 20 percent of the patients using the dentist-supervised Home Bleaching procedure experience some tooth sensitivity, while 13 percent experience gum or mouth irritation. This, too, should be resolved once the treatment ends.
If ingested in large amounts, the carbamide or hydrogen peroxide bleaching solution could produce significant health problems, including nausea, vomiting and some burning. However, mouth trays are custom fitted to alleviate this concern.
Patients who use ill-fitting, over-the-counter home bleaching systems often experience more severe side effects. According to the American Dental Association, there is data to suggest that many quick-fix solutions may cause damage to the tooth pulp, enamel, gums and other areas of the mouth.
